The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan is already yielding results for the residents, communities and businesses of Northern Ontario through its strategic investments in Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) projects said the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for FedNor.

“Our commitment to the North and our approach to strategic investment in the priorities brought forward by Northern Ontario communities are already paying dividends,” stated Minister Clement. “Our government has invested in 55 CAF projects that help the economic growth and create jobs throughout the region.”

On Wednesday, the Government tabled its Fourth Report outlining the results of Canada’s Economic Action Plan (EAP). While stressing that 97 percent of 2009-10 funding has been committed, the report also clearly shows that EAP investments totalling $62 billion are working to protect Canadian jobs and incomes.

Minister Clement highlighted some key projects that have benefited from CAF funding and that are making a real difference in the lives of Northern Ontarians, including:

  • A renovation project in the Municipality of Wawa that is using a CAF investment to turn an existing building into a training centre for workers who have been displaced by local mill shutdowns.
  • The construction of a 2,880 sq. ft. small business centre that will offer services to members of the remote First Nation Community of Wunnumin Lake.
  • The expansion of the Sault Ste. Marie airport terminal building that is enabling the Canadian Border Services Agency to continue its support for international flights to the city.
  • The installation of a reinforced cement floor into an existing warehouse to allow the fly-in community of Fort Albany First Nation to store equipment and supplies year round.
  • The building of a large, state-of-the-art hangar facility at the Sudbury airport that will promote future business growth and benefits for the entire region.
  • “The benefits of Canada’s Economic Action Plan are undeniable as evidenced in our report and in communities throughout the nation,” added Minister Clement. “We are succeeding in diversifying the economy, working through the global recession and in helping to create jobs for Canadians.”
