The Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) is a technology network that supports companies and organizations across Canada by providing financial and advisory assistance. NRC-IRAP is the Government of Canada's tool for helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) develop new technologies that result in the commercialization of new or improved products and processes.

IRAP Facts at a Glance

·    IRAP’s network consisting of 260 technical, business and innovation network advisors spread throughout 100 communities across Canada can:

-     help refine technology or R&D plans

-     provide technical information and patent searches

-     offer strategic business planning and market research

-     impart product and process improvement expertise.

·    More than 9000 clients assisted annually

·    Shared financial assistance to over 100 organizations that provide technology and business services

·    Support firms for international technology missions throughout North America, Asia and Europe

IRAP Benefits to SMEs

·    Increased capabilities and competiveness

IRAP Shared Financial Contribution Programs

·    Can only be applied to direct labour or contracted labour costs.

·    Up to $50,000 for small R&D projects

·    Up to $1,000,000 for large R&D projects

·    Up to $15,000 for intellectual property relating to patent filing

·    Up to $30,000 for business growth strategies

·    $30,000 Youth Internship Program

IRAP Criteria for support

·    Project must advance the technological capabilities or new core competency of the firm

·    Firm must be able to commercialize the results of the project

·    Create significant contribution to revenue and employment for both applicant and Canada

·    Fulfill environmental, animal and human ethics
